Question | Answer |
WHAT? (What are the big environmental problems we are facing nowadays?) | Climate change is the BIG one, but it is still not getting enough attention and it affects everything. |
WHERE? (Where can you see the effects of Climate Change clearly?) | Oceans! In my study field (Marine Biosciences) climate change affects the pH of water. This causes many marine species to die. |
Why? (Why are Oceans more acid?) | Water temperature is rising, making it more acid. Briefly, over time man produced CO2 has altered the chemistry of sea water. This affects the life cycles of many marine organisms, particularly those at the lower end of the food chain. This is the worst scenario because it means the entire food chain is compromised. |
How? (How can we solve the problem?) | We have to either stop temperatures from rising more or make them decrease. At the moment, we can’t just do that by reducing CO2 emissions, we need to actually take those in atmosphere out. This isn't possible yet. We simply to not have the technology. However, a lot of research is being done. In the meantime, we have to learn how to avoid making the situation worsr. It is our planet, and we have to live in it. Luckily, with climate change there have been many government meetings. The top 21 reached a decision of reducing the target for temperature increase from 2 degrees to 1.5 degrees. It is a start... |
But, what? (What can WE do from home?) | Everybody has a part to play. We can all start through obvious, simple ways: using public transportation, turning the lights off, recycling more and, essentially, using our common sense. If we make an effort, we can do it. |
