What is the definition of 'new social movements'? The term new social movements (NSMs) is a theory of social movements that attempts to explain the plethora of new movements that have come up in various western societies roughly since the mid-1960s (i.e. in a post-industrial economy) which are claimed to depart significantly from the conventional social movement
What is the purpose of 'new social movements'? They identify a problem, determine that responsible parties are failing to address it adequately, and therefore take action, themselves. To be more efficient, participants structure their activities into social movement organizations (SMOs). SMOs share the goals of the social movement and work toward these goals.
What makes 'new social movements' different? -Interested wide issues related to the quality of life and expressing individuality. -Not based on class, but usually mainly middle-class support. -No formal membership -No formal structure (no chairperson, secretary, committees, etc.) -Everyone can take part in decision making and in direct actions. -Often have a strong sense of being morally right. -Often the movements are international, because the issues they focus on are international. -supporters are often young; NSms appeal more to young people than traditional parties do.
What do 'new social movement' include? -The environmental and ecological movement -Women's liberation and feminism -Peace and anti-nuclear movement -Gay and lesbian liberation movement -The animal rights movement
New social movements tactics include? -Road protesters occupying trees and buildings on sites scheduled for clearing. -Animal rights protesters breaking into laboratories and releasing animals into the wild. -Protesters against exports of live animals blocking the way of lorries into ports. -Protesters against genetically modified crops destroying fields of crops. -Protesters against globalization, such as those in Seattle and Prague in 2000.
