Assessment Task 2: Demonstration & Tutor Observation. Topic 2 Experiencing counselling
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to adopt the role of client & practice the providing core conditions. Provide constructive feedback in the role of observer & be able to be a client. Students will be able to demonstrate key micro-counselling that underpin counselling such as: Deep attentive listening, Reflecting back key meanings through summarizing & paraphrasing, encouraging & questioning.
Assessment Criteria: 2.1 The roles of the counsellor & client are described; and the conditions of role play observed, and feedback explained. 2.2 Practice counselling sessions are undertaken to demonstrate CCP core conditions Appropriate micro-counselling skills are displayed. 2.3 Constructive feedback is given to counsellor practice roles and skills learned are identified.
Topic 3 Structuring a Counselling Meeting that builds a Collaborative Relationship: Learning outcome Demonstrate the ability to welcome clients. Create a safe place for them. Explain Confidentiality. Develop therapeutic relationship.
Assement Criteria: Client welcomed. Ethics & Confidentiality explained& agreed. Purpose, focus & boundaries established. Issues that impact on client safety are identified.
Client preferences to counselling tasks, methods & outcomes are agreed. Application of client centred core conditions is demonstrated & confirms understanding of role of not directing & encouraging client autonomy.
Client confirms empathy, unconditional positive regard & congruence. Constructive feedback is given to counsellor practice roles & skills learned are identified.
Topic 4 Close Tracking of Clients Feelings & Meanings. Students demonstrate active listening. Attend to clients feelings. Follow sensitively clients meaning. Check Verbally on closeness of tracking with client.
Assessment Criteria: Openness & sensitivity to client contexts. Culture, Lifestyle, Gender, Sexual Orientation. Active listening skills are practiced. Client confirms accuracy of expressed summary.
Empathy is shown via close tracking of clients frame of reference, meaning & feelings. Via communication. The client responds positively & confirms accuracy of perception.
Constructive feedback to counselor practice feedback roles. Skills learned are identified.
Topic 5: Awareness Of personal Responses. Differentiate self & other frame of reference in the counselling relationship.
Developing own responses and learning when to share these in the service of the client. Ability to identify, explore & discuss own issues & responses that block positive regard, empathy & congruence, demonstrated in group or individual discussion.
Strategies for appropriate management of own responses and issues are Identified. Strategies are implemented during counselling session.
Student Instructions 70% of final mark Assessment undertaken in two parts. Parts 2a & 2b And is designed to provide a sequence of practice evaluations which will help to:
1. Receive clear feedback 2. Identify areas for future practice development.
Assessment 2A During class from Mid-May, undertake a counselling session in a practice triad in which the following will be demonstrated: 1. Clients are warmly welcomed. & ethical & confidential practice principles are explained & agreed on.
2. Client purpose focus & boundaries are established & issues that may impact on client safety are identified. 3. Empathy, feelings & sensitivity to the clients changing frame of reference are demonstrated & communicated via close tracking of clients frame of reference, meaning and feelings.
4. Active listening skills are demonstrated. Receive back from tutor & peers.
Within 2 days of the session email a reflection of the session to the tutor: Include. 1. What did you notice about the role & importance of positive regard, empathy and congruence.
2. Reflection on your own issues & responses that blocked-positive regard, empathy & congruence. 3. How you plan to manage these responses & issues.
