Christian views AGAINST divorce Marriage should be a commitment for life - affirmed in the vows which state "Till death do us part" Roman Catholics do not accept it - must get an annulment (a declaration that the marriage was not a true marriage) They reinforce traditional views that when married, the couple become 'one flesh'
Islam views FOR divorce Last resort Regulations about divorce (e.g. if someone is in prison) Declare intention to divorce 3 times in one month Iddah - 3 months couple must live together to ensure that wife is not pregnant and to see if they can sort it out After this, free to marry again Since marriage is a contract, the contract can be ended, as with all contracts

Why does the Church promote family? At baptism, child gets godparents, who support parents in bringing up child Sunday schools - children learn about religion and enforces what they learn at home Church seen as extended family Provides support groups for family Teaches morals and ideals or children to follow through the Bible

Christian and Muslim teachings on sex outside of marriage Sex should only be within marriage Frown upon promiscuity and pre-marital sex Because sex carries with it the responsibility of creating children, and both religions teach that children need the stability of family
What do more modern Christians and Muslims think about sex outside marriage? Old teachings outdated Contraception more reliable and so pre-marital sex carries less chance of having children Stress that sex should only take place in a loving, committed relationship
Why is promiscuity frowned upon? Encourages people to treat their bodies as objects Christians teach that the body is "the temple of the holy spirit" and should be treated with respect
Why is adultery forbidden in both religions? Threatens stability of marriage and goes against mariage vows Against the 10 Commandments In some Islamic countries, it carries the death penalty Because traditional teachings on marriage - exclusion of all others
Christian views FOR homosexulaity God created everyone in his image Love your neighbour Some same sex friendships in Bible upheld as ideal - David and Johnathan
Christian views AGAINST homosexuality Bible says that homosexuals will be "vomited out of the land" Sex only within a marriage, and homosexuals cannot marry Sex is for the purpose of procreation - any sex act, including homosexuality, which does not fulfil this purpose is wrong
Islam views FOR homosexuality Allah created everyone World made like a flower garden - there are different people as part of the design
Islam views AGAINST homosexuality All Muslims expected to have children - homosexuality prevents this Rejected by Shari'ah law - often illegal in Islamic countries Seen as a sin One saying of Muhammad states that "kill one that is doing it..."
