Bible The holy book of Christians
Church The community of Christians (with a small c it means a Christian place of worship)
Conscience An inner feeling of the rightness or wrongness of an action
The Decalogue The Ten Commandments
Democratic processes The ways in which all citizens can take part in government (usually through elections)
Electoral processes The ways in which voting is oragnised
The Golden Rule The teaching of Jesus that you should treat others as you would like them to treat you
Human Rights The rights and freedoms to which everyone is entitled
Political Party A group which tries to be elected into power based on its policies (e.g. Labour, Conservative)
Pressure Group A group formed to influence government policy on a particular issue
Situation Ethics The idea that Christians should base moral decisions on what is the most loving thing to do
Social Change The way in which society has changed and is changing (and also the possibilities for future change)
Who do some Christians only use the Bible to make moral decisions? • The Bible is the word of God & so is God’s guidance on making decisions • The Bible contains the Decalogue - guidance on adultery, stealing, murder, lying etc. • The Bible contains Jesus’ teachings on how to live, which Christians should follow as they believe he is the son of God • The Bible contains letters from disciples on how to live
Why do some Christians believe we shouldn't only use the Bible? • We need the Church to teach us what the Bible means • Some believe the Bible is only inspired by God & must be interpreted for the modern world • Some Christians believe their conscience is the voice of God so can be trusted along with the Bible
Why do some Christians use the Church for guidance on moral decisions? • The Church is the body of Christ (Jesus working in today’s world) so it has the same authority as the Bible • God speaks to the world today through the Church • The Church is guided by God in making moral decisions on moral issues of today’s modern world • Catholic Christians believe the Magisterium gives perfect guidance on moral behaviour
Why do some Christians use their conscience to make moral decisons? • Some Christians believe their conscience is the voice of God speaking directly to them • St Paul taught that our conscience should be the final part of making a moral decision • Some believe that listening to your conscience is better than listening to the Church as it comes directly from God without other people’s interpretation
Why will some Christians not use their conscience when making moral decisions? • In the past, people have used their conscience to justify doing bad things • Some believe the Church & the Bible have more authority than one person’s conscience • If everyone followed their conscience & not laws, the world would be chaos
Why do some Christians use Situation Ethics when making moral decisions? • Jesus seemed to follow Situation Ethics because he overruled what the Old Testament said when he thought it was unloving e.g he healed people on the Sabbath (Sunday) which was against OT law • Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love God & your neighbour so we should do what has the most loving results • Christianity is a religion based on love not laws • It is wrong to ignore the consequences of your actions
Why do some Christians think following Situation Ethics is wrong? • The Bible is the word of God & should be followed exactly so we should follow the Decalogue & Jesus’ teaching, not our own ideas of what is most loving • We cannot be sure of what is the most loving outcome
Why are human rights important for Christians? • God created life so it is sacred & holy therefore it should be protected with HR • Everyone is made in the image of God so we should treat everyone fairly & equally which HR ensures • Freedom of thought, conscience, religion & expression are part of being a Christian - Christians must have the right to believe what they want & tell others about it - as the Bible tells them to do • HR ensure Christians are not disadvantaged in job applications because of what they believe
How can human rights cause problems for Christians? • Some Christians believe no one has the right to form a civil partnership/for homosexuals to raise children - goes against God’s will • Some are against the right to marry someone of another religion so children will always be brought up as Christians • HR laws can be used to suggest women should be allowed to be priests/priests should be allowed to have children but this goes against the Catholic Church teachings
Why should people take part in electoral/democratic processes? • We pay taxes & VAT - voting gives you control over how much we pay & how the government’s money is spent • Gives you a chance to affect new laws • Gives you a say in how armed forces, schools, the NHS are run • People have fought for the right to vote
Why should Christians take part in electoral/democratic processes? • The government upholds the right of equality, fair treatment & other rights in line with Christianity • To ensure the right to follow one’s own religion & freedom of expression is maintained
What are some examples of Christian teachings on moral duties/responsibilities? • The Golden Rule - do to others as you would have them do to you • Parable of the Sheep & the Goats - those who are like sheep (who helped the poor & suffering) will go to heaven, those who are like goats (didn’t help) will go to hell • Story of Cain & Abel - anyone who has material possessions & sees his brother in need but does not pity him does not love God
What are the positives and negatives of genetic engineering? • Positives - offers chance for cure to diseases, animal cloning doesn’t harm human embryos, monitored by law & can be beneficial • Negatives - don’t know the long-term consequences, places too much power in the hands of scientists, could cause genetic screening for jobs, ‘designer’ babies
What are the Catholic views on genetic engineering? • Life begins at conception so ending life, even in a test tube after scientific research has been done, is wrong • Killing an embryo is killing a human being • The embryos used are produced by un-Christian means
What are the Liberal Protestant views on genetic engineering? • Jesus showed that Christians should try to cure diseases - using genetic cures are no different from finding drug cures • Embryos do not become a foetus until they are 14 days old
What are the Evangelical Protestant views on genetic engineering? • God creates genetic make-up of each person - we have no right to interfere • Playing God is a great sin • It is wrong to try & make Earth perfect - only heaven is perfect
