Question Answer
What is meant by situational variables? external factors that affect the result of something
What are the three situational variables that affect obedience? proximity, uniform, location
What is meant by proximity? The physical closeness or distance of an authority figure to the person they are giving orders to.
What did Milgram find about how proximity affected obedience? When the learner and teacher were in the same room, obedience dropped to 40% When the experimenter gave instructions by telephone, obedience dropped to 20.5%
What is meant by Location? The place where the order is issued.
What did Milgram find about how location affected obedience? When the building was run-down rather than at a university, conformity dropped to 47.5. location adds legitimacy to authority
What did Milgram find about how uniform affected obedience? when the experimenter had on 'every day clothes' the conformity dropped drastically to 20%
What research support is there for Uniform? (strength) Bickman had three confederates dress in three different outfits- jacket and tie, a milkman outfit, and a security guards uniform. They asked passers by to pick up litter. People were twice as likely to pick litter up for the confederate dressed as the security guard.
What is a limitation of MIlgram's study? Orne and Holland previously state that ppts knew didn't believe the study. This is further true because of the extra manipulation. Low internal validity
Who applied these findings across different cultures? (strength) Miranda et al. found obedience rate of over 90% of Spanish students. Can apply it culturally
