What is proactive interference? proactive interference occurs when an older memory interferes with a newer one
What is retroactive interference? retroactive interference occurs when a newer memory interferes with an older memory
Who did a study into interference? McGeoch and McDonald
What did McGeoch and McDonald do? Studies retroactive interference by changing the amount of similarity between two sets of materials. They had to remember a list of words, and were then given a new list
What were the groups in McGeoch and McDonald's study? Group 1: Synonyms Group 2: Antonyms Group 3: Unrelated words Group 4: nonsense syllables Group 5: three-digit numbers Group 6: No new list

What is a strength of McGeoch and McDonald's study? IT was a lab study which means that is is controlled and has high validity
What is a disadvantage to McGeoch and McDonald's study? they use artificial material that does not mirror real life situations
What is another strength of interference? it can mirror real life- Baddeley and Hitch: they asked rugby players to try and remember the names of teams they had played in that season. Accurate recall did not depend on how long ago, it was more to do with how many
