Question | Answer |
What is electrolysis | The breaking down of a compound using an electric current |
What kind of compound only works with electrolysis. | Ionic compounds, when they are molten or dissolved in water because they only conduct electricity in that state |
What is an anode, cathode, electrode and electrolyte? | Electrolyte: a compound that conducts electricity when molten and breaks down during electrolysis. Electrode: rods that carry the electric current to and from the electrolyte. Anode: +electrode Cathode: -electrode |
What is an inert electrode? | An electrode that does not react during electrolysis |
Why are electrodes normally made from inert conductors? | So that the electrodes do not react with the electrolyte or the products of the electrolysis. |
Explanation for electrolysis with lead bromide. | -carried out in fume cupboard because bromine is toxic and corrosive -lead bromide is heated, begins to melt and the lamp lights up -which shows an electric current is flowing, and ions in electrolyte are moving. -electric current decomposes the lead bromide. -grey beads of molten lead form at cathode -reddish brownish gas formed at anode. |
