Question Answer
Integer the set of whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3,..) and their opposites (0, -1, -2, -3, ...)
Absolute Value the distance from zero.
Opposite The opposite of an integer is the integer with an opposite sign e,.g the opposite of 2 is -2 and the opposite of -6 is 6. The opposite of a number is also called the additive inverse as the number (-6) and the opposite (6) sum to 0.
Parts of Addition The first term is called augend (6) and the second term is called addend (3). The result of addition is called the sum (9). \(6+3=9\) Not everyone uses the term augend some just use the term addend for both the first and second terms.
Using a Number Line to Do Integer Addition 1) Find the augend (starting value). 2) For a positive addend move right and for a negative addend move left 3) Label your finishing value.
Addition using Chip Model 1. Use two different chips (e.g. red and blue) to represent positive and negative values. 2. Selecting the right number of red (negative) or yellow chips (positive) 3. The add the right number of red and yellow chips for the addend 4. Pair up red and yellow chips (zero pairs) and remove 5 Count the remaining red or yellow chips (only 1 type of chip should be left)
Addition using Chip Model #2
Parts of Subtraction The first term in subtraction is minuend (5) and the second term is called subtrahend (1). The result of subtraction is called the difference (4). You can think of the difference as the distance between the minuend and subtrahend. \(5-1=4\)
Using a Number Line to Do Integer Subtraction 1) Find the minuend (starting value). 2) For a positive subtrahend move left and for a negative subtrahend move right 3) Label your finishing value. \(9-3=6\)
Integer Subtraction with chips
Equivalent Expressions expressions that look different, but represent the same value 3+4 = 4+3 (commutative) 6+(4+3) = (6+4)+3 (associative) 3*(4+5) = 3*4 + 3*5 (distributive) 3 + (-4) = 3-4 (subtraction)
Multiplying and Dividing Integers: Positive x Positive = Positive Positive x Negative = Negative Negative x Negative = Positive Negative x Positive = Negative
