Question | Answer |
Particle | The mass is considered to be concentrated at a single point. This means we can ignore air-resistance and rotational effects because there are no dimensions. |
Rod | An object with one dimension e.g ruler, pencil. This means the mass can be considered equally distributed along a straight line. A rod has no thickness and doesn't bend or buckle. |
Lamina | A 2D object. The mass is considered equally distributed across the flat surface. |
Uniform Body | An object with uniform density. This allows the mass to be considered concentrated at a single point at the geometrical centre of the body. |
Light Object | An object which has a very small mass in comparison with other objects. We treat it as having 0 mass. |
Inextensible String | A string that does not stretch under a load. |
Inelastic string | A string that does not stretch under a load. |
Smooth Surface | To model a surface as smooth means to ignore the effects of friction. |
Rough Surface | You need to consider the effects of friction when using rough surfaces. |
Wire | A rigid, thin length of metal, which is treated as being one dimensional. A wire can be smooth or rough. |
Smooth and light pulley | A pulley which has no friction and no mass. |
Bead | A particle which is threaded onto and moves freely along a wire or string. |
Peg | A point of suspension. A peg is treated as being dimensionless and is usually fixed. A peg can be rough or smooth. |
Air Resistance | Friction against an object as it moves through the air. Treated in M1 as negligible. |
Wind | Wind can be ignored unless specifically mentioned. |
Gravity | The attraction of all objects to the Earth. We take acceleration due to gravity as 9.8ms^-2 |
