Question Answer
HOUSING / TYPES OF HOUSES - a house/detached house is a building for people to live and often has more than one level/storey/floor. - bungalow - a house built just on one level - semi-detached house/AE duplex – multi storeyed house with one common wall - terraced houses/AE row houses – have common walls, all stay in one row and create a street - flat/apartment – a set of rooms including a kitchen, a bathroom and toilet, living room and bedrooms within a large building called a block of flats/AE apartment house, high-rise or condominium. - cottage – smaller country house.
What does home mean to us? While home is a place where people feel safe, comfortable and relaxed, a house is only a building. Some people feel that home is their birthplace -it is not only the building or flat where they live. They have family and friends there and all needed infrastructure , too. Home is connected with geographical location, emotional ties, housing, interior furnishing and décor.
HOUSING IN BRITAIN Almost half of all British families own the houses in which they live. There are several types of houses in Britain: < a terraced house - built in a row < a semi-detached house - two houses joined together by one common wall < a detached house - stands by itself < a bungalow - a one storey house < a cottage - small village house has a garden and a storage space downstairs. A garage is attached to the house. Upstairs there is one big bedroom with bathroom and smaller bedrooms, a bathroom with lavatory. British are fond of gardening. A beautiful well-kept lawn is a pride of every British family.
HOUSING IN the USA People in cities live in big apartment houses. Living costs in New York or Los Angeles are pretty high and people pay their living costs according the address they live in, e.g. renting a small apartment(2rooms and a kitchen) in Manhattan costs 3,000$ per month. Most people live in the country or in small towns in houses with front and back gardens. The houses are usually well equipped, with 2 or 3 garages. Wealthy people have large houses with many rooms, a swimming pool and tennis courts. A job is very important for American people, that is why they move every 10 years in average. There is not public transport in the country or in small towns. In American family there are usually more than one car, because the distances are very big and doing shopping or going to school without a car is very difficult (they have school buses).
HOUSING IN SLOVAKIA Many Slovaks live in flats in block of flats which create a housing estate. These days, a lot of them are reconstructed and new ones are being built but not as many as before. Nowadays, flats are much more larger, modern with a terrace, a big living room, several bedrooms, bathrooms and toilet. People can use a cellar and a garage which are the part of the block of flats or apartment house. There are also smaller flats with just one or two rooms used usually by students, young families or people who do not have enough money for keeping a house or a big flat. There are a lot of people who build their new big houses in the suburbs of big cities or in the country. Living in the country is easier and cheaper for them, and they prefer country calm and peace. Slovak houses are usually the big ones, shared by two generations living together. Sometimes people rent the upper floor to keep the house because keeping a big house is very expensive and difficult for them.
FURNITURE Is not very different in our countries. The sitting room has a settee and armchairs, a wall unit with the hi-fi system and TV set, a bookcase and a coffee table. There is a carpet – smaller or bigger, which makes the room warmer and comfortable. Most of the houses have a fireplace. The kitchen furniture includes the kitchen cupboards, sink, cooker, dishwasher and fridge-freezer - they are usually built-in, (British have washing machines usually in the kitchen). There are also a table with chairs. The bedroom has a bed or a double bed, (built-in) wardrobes, a dressing table with a mirror/table and a stool. The US house is usually well-furnished and equipped with modern household appliances. Each child in the family has his/her own room.
BUYING A FLAT / HOUSE It is not easy to buy a flat/house in GB or Slovakia, the prices of property are too high. For a young family it is impossible without a help of parents or a mortgage. In order to buy a house/flat you do not need all the money – it is possible to borrow up to 90% from a bank. A lot of people pay off the mortgage for many years after moving into a house, some people take a loan. The social problem which can occur in many countries is homelessness. Homeless people usually live in asylum houses or just in the street. Many of them are addicted or mentally ill, they are mostly unemployed.
DIFFERENT COUNTRIES = DIFFERENT HOUSES Houses look different in different countries. In countries with warm or hot climate they are built from stone, with big terraces, the rooms are bigger and usually they are set in the gardens with more trees. In cold countries houses are smaller, with smaller rooms and fire places, just with balconies or without them. They are usually built from materials which can keep warmth and have good isolation, because heating (gas and electricity) is very expensive nowadays.
