Question Answer
1.What is an Enzyme? An Enzyme is produced by a living organism, which acts like a catalyst.
2.What is a catalyst? A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, but remains unchanged are are not used up in the reaction.
3.What are the two things that affect Enzyme activity? Temperature and pH.
4.1What is the equation for an enzyme reaction? Enzyme Substrate ----------> product
4.2 What is the substrate? The substrate is the substance upon which the enzyme acts resulting in the formation of an object.
4.3 What is the product? The product is the molecule present at the end of the enzyme reaction.
5.1 What are the two types of Enzyme reactions? Breakdown reaction and build-up/synthesis reactions.
5.2. What is a breakdown reaction? A breakdown reaction is a reaction that a large substance is broken down into a smaller product(s).
5.3. What is a build-up/ synthesis reaction? A synthesis/build-up reaction is a reaction that a small substance is built up into a larger product.
6.What are Enzymes made of? Protein
7.1 What happens to an enzyme when the temperature is low? The Enzyme works slower, but it does not damage them.
7.2 What happens to an enzyme when the temperature is high? The Enzyme works faster when the temperature is increased, up to a certain point.
