Foreign Policy Decisions a nation makes that concern official relations with other countries. Also called external relations or foreign affairs.
Domestic Policy Decisions a nation makes that concern matters within the country.
Economic Prosperity Ensuring a stable and prosperous standard of living.
Security and Safety Making a place to live without fear or threat.
Beliefs and Values To affirm and promote the beliefs, values, and culture of the citizens.
Sovereignty Managing your own affairs and allowing others to manage theirs, all without any interference: mutual independence.
Equal Sovereignty Where all sovereign states have the same equal rights of sovereignty, no matter their size or state of wealth.
Domestic Sovereignty The state has power over all the affairs that take place inside its boundaries and no one else may interfere.
Territorial Integrity The right of the state to defend its borders with military means against other states.
Political Independence The right of the state to choose and develop its own form of government.
Prosperity To obtain a high standard of living for citizens and a stable economy.
Ideology A set of beliefs held by a nation. Might be spread to others or defended in an attempt to convey superiority over contending ideas.
Security Attempts are made to reduce any sense of fear or threat to a nation.
Peace End to war and agreement with other nations.
Prestige The need to make a nation look good to other countries and strive for status and recognition.
Diplomacy Negotiation between nations.
Propaganda Using selected information to promote an ideology.
Trade Exchanging goods, resources, and services with other nations.
Tariffs Taxes on foreign or imported goods coming into one's country.
Quotas Setting numbers on how many foreign goods are allowed to be imported into a country.
Boycotts Taking action in some way that represents a dislike or differing ideas. Shows the countries stance in matters to other nations.
Economic Warfare Blockades, fines, or laws designed to disrupt a nation's economy.
Foreign Aid Assistance given by a country to help less developed nations become more self-sufficient.
Cultural Relations Participating in cultural events in an effort to lessen misunderstanding between nations.
Loans and Credits Lending money, goods, expertise or technology to help other nations.
Clandestine Actions Spying in an order to disrupt the peace and security of other nations.
Military Intervention An invasion of another nation.
War Drastic physical conflict, or the threat of war.
Negotiation and Mediation Third party involvement attempting to aid in solving a problem.
Treaties and Alliances Agreements to work together and act as a united group.
Collective Security Standing together to improve the chances of peace.
International Law Commons laws to all nations who agree to follow them.
Past Experience Good relations of teamwork with a fellow nation and effective results of working together in the past.
Personal Views of The Leader Who determines foreign policy and what personal mindset they carry with it.
Public Opinion Citizens influencing how a government will act towards other governments.
Power Decisions influenced by greater powers or close allies.
Policies of Other Nations Rules that conflict with foreign policy ideas and restrict relations with some countries.
Ideology Beliefs that differ too drastically can result in a lack of foreign relations.
Geography Physical positioning of a country in the world restricts the communication and borders between nations.
