Supreme Court | The highest Judicial Court in a country or state. |
Original Jurisdiction | The authority to hear cases for the first time |
Appellate Jurisdiction | The cases have been heard in a lower court, and it's been appealed. |
"Rule By 4" | Supreme Court of the U.S that permits four of the nine justices to grant a writ of certiorari. |
Precedent | Gives guidance to the other judges by offering a model upon which base their individual thoughts/decisions on similar cases. |
Stare Decisis | A Latin term; that means "Let the decision stand." |
Brief | Is a written document that explains one side's position on the case. |
Majority Opinion | Presents the views of the majority of the justices on a case. |
Dissenting Opinion | Justices who oppose the majority decision issue this |
Concurring Opinion | The justice who agrees with the majority decision but has a different reason. |
Marbury V.S. Madison | Federal power;. A case decided by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Marshall in 1803. The Court declared that a certain law passed by Congress should not be enforced, because the law was opposed to the Constitution. |
