Question Answer
List 8 properties of Acids 1.Have a low PH (turn PH paper red/orange) 2. Sour 3. Can Kill Cells 4. Corrosive 5. Make Hydrogen 6.Make Carbon dioxide 7. Have hydrogen in them and acid in their name. 8. Neutralised by bases
List 6 properties of Alkalis 1. High PH (turn filter paper blue/purple) 2. Soapy 3.Corrosive 4. Neutralise acids to make salt 5. Soluble bases 6. Bases are Metal oxides, hydroxides and carbonates
Where is...on the PH Scale? 1. Acid 2.Neutral 3. Alkali 1. Lower than 7 2. 7 3. Higher than 7
How would you measure the pH of an unknown liquid. Indicator- Mixture of dyes which changes colour depending on whether it is an acid or alkali. (ie. universal indicator, litmus paper)
How can indigestion be helped using neutralisation? Indigestion is caused by too much hydrochloric acid in the stomach. The excess acid must be neutralised by a medium strength base.
Acid + Base= A Salt + Water
What happens to a crop if it is grown in the wrong pH? Poor growth. Liming the soil neutralises the acid
Carbon Dioxide + Water= Carbonic Acid
What does acid rain do you metal? Acid rain is acidic because of Co2 in the air. It corrodes the metal with devastating effects.
