Question | Answer |
Atoms and Molecules | Atoms are the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist. A Molecule are a group of atoms bonded together. |
What is the difference between Physical and Chemical Change? | When chemical bonds form between atoms a new substance is formed. It is difficult to reverse chemical change/ chemical reaction. |
What is an element? | An element is one type of atom |
What is a compound? | A compound is made of two or more seperate elements. |
What is a mixture? | A mixture is made by mixing other substances together |
Structure of an Atom | All the atoms of a particular element have the same atomic number but they can have different mass numbers because the number of neutrons may vary. Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. |
Isotope | Isotopes have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. |
Proton Number | Number of protons in a nucleus |
Nucleon Number | Number of nucleons is the number of protons + the number of neutrons in the nucleus |
How can you tell if atoms are from the same element? | They have the same atomic number (proton number) |
Relative Atomic Mass | Equivalent to the number of protons and neutrons in an atom |
