Question | Answer |
Biological and Phychological theories of crime... | - criminal or deviant behaviour is determind by physical or psychological conditions - crime is put down to their being something 'wrong' with the person, rather than society. |
biological factors- what is Phrenology? | personality could be determined by the shape of your skull |
outline cearser lambroso's study.. | 6th nov 1835 - 19th oct 1901 - looks at genetic make up of criminals - criminals had abnormal features that made them different from the rest of the population - large jaws and cheekbones- (earlier stage of evolution) |
what do psychologists look into? | - criminal behaviours; genetically based personality characteristics - extra y chromosome- neirotic extroverts - PET scans; psychopaths often have brain abnormalities; organic reasons for behaviour - poor relationships with mother/father in childhood; malajusted personalities. |
why do sociologists reject both biological and psychological theories? | because neither say anything about the role society plays, or about social groups and the pressures they push to look a certain way, and act a certain way- peer pressure, not all criminals have these physical atributes, you cannot generalise if crime is a social construct |
biological explanations for criminal behaviour... | - they assume some people are 'born a criminal' who are biologically different to non-criminals - they have mental and physicial differences- causes them to have an inability to learn and follow rules - its determined by genes - a form of illness caused by pathological factors, specific to individuals |
