Question Answer
Based on your examination of the photographs and your reading of the chapter, what impact do you think American Indian policies had on Native peoples? -They control mostly everything and they do not get along very well. Everything they did everyday was based off of what the Americans had said they could or could not do. Americans effected the way they dressed also. Normally they would be wearing necklaces and other items from their culture but as time when on they started dressing in suits.
Do you see evidence of the problems and/or concerns expressed by Chief Joseph? Explain your answer. -In the one picture a child is left alone with its dog and looks to be cold. Winds are blowing and there seems to be no one else around. “My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food; no one knows where they are—perhaps freezing to death.”
Chief Joseph What are Chief Joseph’s feelings about American Indian policy? Too many misinterpretations have been made; too many misunderstandings have come up between the white men and the Indians. If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian he can live in peace. There need be no trouble. Treat all men alike. Give them the same laws.
Chief Joseph What are his concerns and/or complaints? Words do not stand long without actions to back them up. They have been promised so much stuff but nothing has been done for them to have that stuff.
Do you think Chief Joseph would express different ideas if he was addressing his own people rather than the government? Why or why not? Probably, but because it is the government he has to have at least a little respect and tell them what he and his people think. If he was talking to people already on his side the letter would have been different.
What is president Arthur’s position on American Indian policy? Everything has just started going downhill. Every little move turns into a conflict between races.
What policy changes does Arthur suggest be made? “ I recommend the passage of an act making the laws of the various States and Territories applicable to the Indian reservations within their borders and extending the laws of the State of Arkansas to the portion of the Indian Territory not occupied by the Five Civilized Tribes.” “The enactment of a general law permitting the allotment in severalty of a reasonable quantity of land secured to them by patent.” “I advise a liberal appropriation for the support of Indian schools.”
