Question Answer
Name some of the important scientist, their achievements and discoveries. Zacharias Jansen - created the first ever microscope. Scientist Robert Hooke - the first ever to use a microscope to see cells. Scientist Robert Brown - first to see smaller structures within cells.
What is the cell theory? It is the idea that: - All living things are made up of one or more cells. - Cells are the basic building blocks of life - New cells are produced from existing cells
Name the three organelles in animal cells that cannot be seen using a light microscope. Mitochondria - where the cell releases energy from food. Lysosomes - where the cell removes all the waste in the cell. Endoplasmic Reticulum - forms a pathway so materials in the cell can move around faster and easier
Explain the roles of each structure within the plant cell. Nucleus: Controls all the activities inside the cell. Cell membrane: The skin that holds the cell together. Cytoplasm: A jelly-like substance where everything takes place. Vacuole: contain waste chemicals that are being moved around the cell.

Explain the role of each structure in a plant cell. Chloroplasts: Where photosynthesis takes place. Cell Wall: hold the cell together like a skeleton. Vacuole: It stores water, sap, nutrients and waste and helps keep the plant rigid.

How do fungal cells make food? Fungal cells don't have chloroplasts but instead release chemicals that digest the material they eat, then they absorb the digested material.

What is a unicellular organism and give some examples. A unicellular organism is one that has only one cell. Some examples are bacteria, daitoms and rotifers (bacteria found in pond water) and Giardia Lambia (bacteria found in human and other animal faeces.
What is Mitosis? Mitosis is the process of one cell diving into two to make a new cell.
How is Mitosis important? Some cells can wear out or get damaged and need to be replaced. Mitosis is the only method that can fix that.
