What is Compliance? (Type of Conformity) | Compliance- Changing public views in order to gain approval. No private changes in opinions, but changes in public opinion. Attitude or behaviour isn't adopted because of content, but because of the rewards. |
What is Internalisation? (Type of Conformity) | Internalisation- Individual accepts the influence because the content is consistent with their own value system. The acceptance of the groups views is both public and private. |
What is Identification? (Type of Conformity) | Identification- Individual accepts influence because they want to be associated with a particular group. By accepting, they feel like they're a part of it. (Has elements of internalisation and compliance) |
What is Normative Social Influence? (Explanation of Conformity) | Normative Social Influence- Individual conforms with the expectations of the majority in order to gain approval or avoid social disapproval. They must believe they are under surveillance by the group. And they do not internalise these views. |
