Name some primary effects of the eruption? -Parts of the main route where destroyed -A thick ash cloud was produced (this caused respiratory problems for animals) -20 farms were destroyed
What were the secondary effects of the eruption? -150km thick ice cap melted, this then caused floods -There were 6 days of no flying >it cost London £102 million of tourist income >cost airline industry $2 billion -Supermarkets ran out of fruit and veg (as they're usually imported) -Places that grew fruit and veg lost money eg KENYA
What were the immediate responses of the eruption? - 95,000 flights were cancelled - 20 families were evacuated -Farm animals moved into barns -Roads were bulldozed into trenches for water to flow into the sea -Warning system was set up in order to give residents a 30 minute warning -Royal navy ships were deployed to bring stranded Britons home
What were the secondary responses? -Travellers tried to claim compensation British Airways tried to claim financial compensation from EU and Government
