Question | Answer |
Validation | Is an automatic computer check to ensure that the data entered is sensible and reasonable. It does not check the accuracy of data. |
Verification | To check that the data on the original source document is identical to the data that you have entered into the system or object document. |
Data | Is words, numbers, dates, images, sounds etc. without context. |
Information | Is a collection of words, numbers, dates, images, sounds etc. put into context, i.e. to give them meaning. |
Knowledge | Is the ability to understand information and to then form judgements, opinions, make predictions and decisions based on that understanding. |
Local Area Network (LAN) | A network of computers that covers a small area, e.g. a school or college. |
Wide Area Network (WAN) | Is a computer network that joins computers together over long distances. |
Input | Data which is inserted into a system for processing and/or storage. |
Output | Data which is sent out of a system. |
Processing time | The time it takes for a processor to process an input and generate an output |
Software | The programs, applications and data in a computer system. Any parts of a computer system that aren't physical. |
Switch | A device for connecting computers and other network capable devices together to form a network |
Cable | A data communications technology that provides broadband internet speeds over the cable television infrastructure. |
Broadband | A high-speed internet connection. |
Geographic Information System (GIS) | A system which manages and displays geographical information such as satellite navigation. |
