Why was there a succession crisis in 1066? | Edward the Confessor died without any children, leaving him heirless. The Witan chose Harold to rule, however William had allegedly been promised the throne by Harold in 1064. Harald Hardrada believed he had a claim to the throne due to his old ancestors ruling years ago, his ancestor was King Canut who ruled the Danelaw region. Edwards only blood heir was Edgar the Aethling, who was only a young teenager without much support. |
What Happened at the Battle of Gate Fulford? | The Vikings landed near York in 1066, the Northern Earls were the first ones to confront the huge Viking army. The Viking army were too powerful however and easily defeated Edwin and Morcar, they then made their way to Stamford Bridge. |
What happened at Stamford Bridge? | The Vikings, and Harold Godwinson's younger Brother Tostig, got a nasty surprise at Stamford Bridge when Harold was their with the main English army, they comfortably defeated the Vikings but lost a lot of good men. |
What happened at Hastings? | After beating the Vikings, the English had to march south immediately after hearing that William had landed at Pevensey, they had to march 300 miles up and down the country in 5 days. The Normans and the Saxons arrived at Hastings, the Saxons stood atop the hill and their shield wall continued to push back the Norman advances, until the Normans performed a false retreat and lured the inexperienced part of Harold's army from their positions, before cutting them down and winning the battle. |
What were the main reasons William and the Normans were successful? | Saxons were tired from a long march. William was a strong leader with great military experience as he had been fighting rebels since he was a young boy (12.) William had a strong army that included cavalry, excellent archers and good ground infantry. |
