What is a server? Is a computer dedicated to providing some specific service for other computers on the network. Example: file, video or print servers.
What is a router? A piece of hardware that connects two or more networks in relation to the internet, data from the ISP is sent into the network and the router then directs the data packets to the correct destinations.
What is Online Advertising? a form of marketing and advertising which uses the Internet to deliver promotional marketing messages to consumers. It includes email marketing, search engine marketing and social media marketing
What is E-Commerce? E-Commerce is a term for any type of business, or commercial transaction, that involves the transfer of information across the Internet
What is Netiquette? It means respecting other users’ views and displaying common courtesy when posting your views to online discussion groups.
What is Online Data Storage? Data storage is another type of online service. Many organisations are providing facilities for you to store and back up your data on their computers and to make files available to share with others
What are compressed files? Files may be extremely large, which can cause problems with transmission (delivery) in terms of speed and network usages. To reduce this problem files have to be compressed before transmission and then expanded after transmission. A common method of doing this is to convert them to zip files
Bus Network In a bus network all the workstations, servers and printers are joined to one cable (the bus). At each end of the cable a terminator is fitted to stop signals reflecting back down the bus.
Ring Network In a ring network each device (workstation, server, printer) is connected to two other devices, this forms a ring for the signals to travel around. Each packet of data on the network travels in one direction and each device receives each packet in turn until the destination device receives it
Star Network In a star network each device on the network has its own cable that connects to a switch or hub. A hub sends every packet of data to every device, whereas a switch only sends a packet of data to the destination device
What is Bandwidth? Bandwidth is the measure of capacity of a communications channel. It measures the amount of data which can be uploaded or downloaded in a specific measure of time. It’s measured in ‘hertz’ or cycles per second
