Question | Answer |
Freud (1909) - Little Hans | Little Hans enabled Freud to test his theory that a child goes through unconscious psychosexual stages during early development, at age 3 child enters phallic stage. During which child focuses interest on opposite sex parent. Freud developed Oedipus complex. |
Aims & Research Questions | To record a case of the Oedipus complex. Little Hans was going through the phallic stage. Hans had a phobia of horses and together Hans' father and Freud studied Hans to try and cure this. |
Research Method | Longitudinal Study |
Sample | 5 yr old, Little Hans. Father- Max Graf, early supporter of Freud. |
Procedure and Findings | Max wrote to Freud when Hans was 5, saying; 'He is afraid a horse will bite him in the street, and this fear seems connected with his having been frightened by a large penis'. Hans and his 'widdler': he had an interest in that part of his body. |
Procedure and Findings (2) | Hans' mother and sister: sister born when he was 3. Expressed hostility towards his sister and developed fear that his mother would drop him when being bathed. When Max talked to him, he said he wished his mother would drown his sister. Unconscious desire translated to fear of being drowned. |
Procedure and Findings (3) | Links between horses and anxiety: fear was that white horses would bite him. Freud felt his fear was loss of his mother. Tracked the link. Hans heard man on street tell child 'Don't put your finger to the white horse or it'll bite you'. Hans asked his mother if she would like to put her finger on his widdler. |
Procedure and Findings (4) | Castration fear: Hans enjoyed playing with his widdler when his mother caught him she threatened she would arrange for it to be cut off. |
Procedure and Findings (5) | Dreams and fantasies: Hans told Max a dream about 2 giraffes- a big one and a crumpled one. Hans took away the crumpled one (mother) and sat on it (claimed) which made the big one cry. Interpreted as representation of Hans getting in parents' bed in the mornings but father (big one) objected. |
Procedure and Findings (6) | Link between fear of horse and fear of father: Freud suggested fear of horses was actually fear of the father. Black around the mouths and blinkers in front of their eyes were symbols for his father's moustache and glasses. |
Procedure and Findings (7) | The resolution: Hans' fear of horses began to subside and Hans developed 2 fantasies showing he had resolved his feelings about his father. 'The plumber came and took away my behind with a pair of pincers and then gave me another, and the same with my widdler'. Bigger backside and widdler like his father. |
Conclusion | Hans suffered phobia of horses because he was suffering from castration anxiety and going through Oedipus complex. Dreams and fantasies helped express conflict and eventually resolved complex by fantasising himself taking on his father's role and placing his father as role of grandfather. |
Evaluation | Can't be generalised. Qualitative data collected Hans didn't formally give consent. Might cause harm and distress to Hans Low Validity Low Reliability |
