ACTS Acts of Parliament are pieces of legislation passed in a country
AGEISM Age discrimination which may lead to stereotyping and discrimination against individuals or groups because of their age.
ANTI-DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICE Ways of thinking and behaving to ensure that there is no prejudices/discrimination/disrespect/bullying/abuse - ensuring that individuals are treated with equal rights
ATTITUDES Involve beliefs and values held about issues such as family, religion, behaviour, etc
BARRIERS Factors which may prevent access to services for individuals. Usually classified into physical, language, geographical, cultural or psychological.
CARE VALUES Occupational standards and codes of practice identifying a framework of values and moral rights of people who use the service.
CONFIDENTIALITY Keeping personal and private information private.
DIGNITY Right to respect and ethical treatment. Showing self respect.
DIRECT DISCRIMINATION Obvious discrimination by words or actions of individuals - deliberately disadvantaging another.
DISABILITY The consequences of an impairment, or other individual difference.
DISCRIMINATION Activities that prevent members of a certain group from accessing the same benefits and rewards as others, treating differently, showing preferences.
DISCRIMINATION BY ASSOCIATION Refers to a situation where an individual is discriminated against through their association with another person.
DISCRIMINATORY LANGUAGE Discriminatory language creates or reinforces stereotypes, e.g. derogatory labels used to describe members of minority group.
DIVERSITY Having differences and variation, celebrating peoples differences.
EMPOWERMENT Increasing the strength/self belief of individuals and communities.
EQUALITY Being treated fairly and impartially.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES Open and fair access to all goods and services.

ETHNICITY Belonging to a common origin, culture or language.
FACILITATE Make (an action or process) easy or easier.
GENDER SOCIALISATION Learning the socially acceptable behaviours for boys and girls - which may be different.
GLASS CEILING Invisible barrier to workplace advancement, usually in regard to women or minority groups.
HARASSMENT Behaviour of an offensive nature, intended to disturb or upset, which so usually repetitive.
IMPLEMENTATION Execution of a plan, idea or policy, etc
INDIRECT DISCRIMINATION Less obvious - occurs when certain conditions are in place that demonstrates a preference for some people over others.
INSTITUTIONAL DISCRIMINATION Discrimination that has been incorporated into the structures, processes and procedures of organisations.
JOINT PLANNING Range of services offered in the same place.
LEGISLATION Laws in Britain, many of which protect the rights of individuals or safeguard those considered to be vulnerable or at risk.
