Question Answer
Emulsifiers And Additives Additives can change the appearance, taste and preserve food to make it better Emulsifiers bind oil and water Emulsifiers have a hydrophobic tail that is attracted to the oil and a hydrophilic head that is attracted to water that connects the two and spreading the oil
Cooking And Chemical Changes Cooking is used for better taste and texture as well as making some food edible Baking powder is used to put air in cakes as when it thermally decomposes it begins to release carbon dioxide
Perfumes Most of the smell is manufactured They need to easily evaporate, be non toxic, insoluble in water and be non irritant Perfumes are usually tested on animals which can be seen as unethical so some companies test on humans
Solids Liquids And Gas Solids have strong forces between the molecules and move very little Gas is the opposite with liquid in the middle We smell when liquids have too much volatility allowing for some particles to evaporate to gas to be smelt
Solutions A solution is a solvent and solute mixed(for example salt and water) Nail varnish has strong forces compared to water so is insoluble in water Acetone(NVR) has stronger attractions meaning NV is soluble in it
Paints and Pigments Paint is a colloid which is a mixture of something with a small something else Small bits can be any state(SLG) Paints work by the solvent evaporating and leaving dry paint
Special pigments Thermochromic pigments can change colour due to thermal energy for things like baby spoons so they don't get burnt Phosphorescent pigments absorb light energy and emits it to make it look as if it glows in the dark like in watches where radioactive unsafe paints were used
Fractional Distillation Crude oil is inputted into a high temperature at the bottom of the column where the shorter chains evaporate and as it cools each chain length cools and condensates at separate layers where each is collected mostly pure
