What did the United Provinces authorise? They authorised a European merchants called Luis Vernet to found a colony in the Falkland Islands in 1828.
How did Vernet respond to the depletion of seal colonies due to British and American sealers? He wanted to preserve seals for his own use, so in 1831 he confiscated 3 American sealing ships.
What did Britain think about Vernet's actions? They saw it as a dangerous development for their trade prospects.
How did they respond to this? In 1833, Britain sent a single ship to reassert British sovereignty over Falkland.
What was the islands only valuable commodity? The seal colonies, however, these were being rapidly depleted by British and American sealers.
