Psychoanalytic Theory (Object Relations):
Mental Illness & health determined by our relationships w/objects in our environment, both human and non-human.
Personality largely unconscious.
Psyche Divided into 3 Parts:
1. Ego = conscious mind
2. Personal Unconscious = anything not presently conscious but could be (includes memories, not instincts)
3. Collective Unconscious = reservoir of experiences as a species; knowledge we're born with.
Archetypes: content of collective unconscious; expressed through dreams, fantasies, delusions.
1. Shadow - Hidden or unconscious aspects of oneself, both good and bad, which the ego has either repressed or never recognized.
2. Anima - The inner feminine side of a man.
3. Animus - the archetype of reason and spirit in women. This is the male aspect of the female psyche, as the anima is the female aspect of male psyche.
4. Persona - the public image of someone.
