PLASTIC MATERIALS
Elastomers
Neoprene
Flexible, insulated and water proof
Used for immersion suits
Rubber
Can be natural or synthetic
Used to make tyres, hoses or rubber bands due to it elasticity
Very flexible, recover its shape and dimension after esternal forces stop forcing on them. Degrade easily with heat, can't be remelted.
Thermoplastics
Softened by heating. Formed and melted as many times we like. Weak bonds polymers
Polyethylene (PE)
Offers chemical resistence, non-toxic (suitable food packaging)
Used in bags, bottles, containers...
Polystyrene (PS)
Very lightweight and transparent
Used in packaging and heat insulation
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Highly resistance forabrasion and impact
Used in pipes, cable insulation and profiles for doors and windows
Polypropylene (PP)
Easy to model and dye, resistant to solvents and splintering
Used for toys, folders, packaning...
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
Suitable for food use, completely recyclable, transparent and easy to dye
Used to make bottles
Teflon
Highly resitance to chemicals and high temperatures
Used to coat frying pans and other kitchen utensils due to non-stick properties
Polycarbonate (PC)
Highly resistance to impact and heat
Used for shatterproof windows, lightweight eyeglass lenses due to it optical transparency
Thermoset
It criss-croos forming networks. Can be shaped using heat, but cannot be re-melted to make new forms
Melamine
Resistant to high temperatures and chemicals, easy to clean
Used as a coating for wooden boards, manufacture of kitchen cupboards
Bakelite
Hard, brittle and dark, withstand heat very well, breaks down at high temperatures
Used to make handles of kitchen utensils, electrical accesories...
Polyester resins
Rigid and brittle. usually strengthened with fibre glasss
Used in car bodiess, domestic swimming pools...
