How can art be an expression of daily life?
Art during the Colonial Period
Art during the colonial period was mainly focused in
religion. The Catholic Church stablished workshops
were Mestizo and Indigenous craftsman created
various works of art. Workshops produced paintings,
sculptures, crafts among others. Artwork was not
mass-produced. They were made by order. People at
the top of society acquired images and paintings to
decorate oratories and chapels they had in their
haciendas. In other cases, sculptures and paintings
were created to decorate churches and to teach
religion. Since many people could not read and write,
paintings represented passages of the bible.
Escuela Quiteña
The artwork developed in the
Audiencia de Quito is known as
Escuela Quiteña. This artwork
was characterized by the
combination of European and
Indigenous techniques and
traits. Most of the workshops for
this art were located in Quito.
Among the most important
painters and sculptors of the
Escuela Quiteña are Bernardo de
Legarda, Miguel de Santiago and
Manuel Chili Caspicara.
