Resource summary
Alkene
Excess O2
CO2(g) + H2O (l)
Complete Combustion
Limited O2
CO(g) + H2O(l)
Incomplete Combustion
H2(g) / Nickel Catalyst
The double bond is broken.
Eg: CH3CH=CH2(l) + H2(g) ------> CH3CH2CH3(g)
Hydrogenation
Eg: CH3CH=CH2
Halogen
Naming goes with "ation" at the end of halogen.
Eg: Bromination (For the example above)
Adds 2 halogen atoms removing the C=C bond.
Eg: CH3CH=CH2 + Br2 -------> CH3CHBrCH2Br
H20(l) and CONC: {H3PO4} with HEAT
Hydration
Removes the double bond and adds an OH instead
Eg: CH3CH=CH2 + H20(l) ------> CH3CH(OH)CH3
HBr(l)
Eg: CH3CH=CH2 + HBr -------> CH3CHBrCH3
Annotations:
Note that HBr breaks down to H+ and Br- . The H+ always goes to the atom with higher H atoms of the double bond pair. EG: CH=CH2 The CH2 has more H atoms :)
Adds a Br and H atom by removing the C=C bond
