Cytoskeleton

Annotations:

  • A network of fibers extending throughout the cytoplasm, regulates cellular activities (ex. moving macromolecules).
  • Keeps the cell together (structure) and insides components(organelles) in place ("anchor-age")
  1. Motor proteins

    Annotations:

    • Movement! Converting chemical energy into mechanical work (using ATP or proton pump).
    1. Different proteins

      Annotations:

      • Has same job (transportation), But different motor proteins are transport/moving different substrates that are for different jobs.
    2. Vesicles

      Annotations:

      • travel along "monorail" in cytoskeleton
      1. Fibers of cytoskeleton
        1. Microtubules

          Annotations:

          • Thickest
          1. Function

            Annotations:

            • Guiding movement, Shaping cell, Separating chromos.in cell division
            1. Cilia + flagella

              Annotations:

              • Basal body keeps them attached
              • Has dynein (motor protein) to get them moving along!
            2. Microfilaments

              Annotations:

              • Thinnest, made of actin (a twisted rope shape motor protein),
              • Bear tension, resisting pulling forces inside the cell
              1. Cortex

                Annotations:

                • A bunch of microfilaments, inside plasma membrane, gives cell a shape.
                1. Function

                  Annotations:

                  • Motor proteins: Myosin and actin get things moving along
                  1. Muscle cells

                    Annotations:

                    • A bunch of microfilaments
                  2. Intermediate filaments

                    Annotations:

                    • In-between size, Break it down --> stronger than microtubules
                    1. Function

                      Annotations:

                      • Give cell a shape and parks the organelles in a spot.
                      • More permenant of the 3.
