- Label each equation 1 and 2
- find a value that can be added or subtracted on each line to make 0 e.g. 2x and 2x on each line
- If not times the lines so they have a matching value
- take away/add the entire line to make value 0
- now simplfy the expression to find the remaining letter
- sub this value into one of the equations to find the other one
