Water enters the thylakoid
space from the water
transport systems. The
energy from the light breaks
the covalent bonding within
water and splits it into 2H
atoms and 1O atom.
Light energy
further splits
the H atoms
into 2H+ ions
and 2e-.
The protons create a proton gradient across
the membrane so the H+ can flow by
chemiosmosis and drive ATP synthase.
