How effective is
the combination
of your main
product and
ancillary texts?
Genre
One of the ways that my branding would have been a success was to clearly establish the
genre by following certain codes and conventions of the Indie genre. One convention that
I adhered to was the artists importance and this was done in all of my products where my
artist heavily features to express the importance of him and his music and to also stress
the fact that he is a solo artist. Another code that I tried to demonstrate in the tasks was
that the music is the most important element of the indie genre. Consequently, there was
a lot of time in the video where the artist can be seen singing the song in a studio and the
ancillary tasks are artist-led. I also included shots of instrumental props in the studio to
enhance this idea.
Location
My use of location is another way that I have created a brand. The narrative location in my
music video was also used to take images for the digipak of my artist, hence linking the two
projects together. I wanted to do this because the location suited the genre as it was
isolated and run down which not only demonstartes the gritty nature of indie music but also
highlighted the fact that he was a solo artist due to te lack of anyone else in the shot. The
use of this locationon both occasions enables the audience to dentify the artist with this
location which appears consistently throughout my products, creating a strong brand.
Clothing
One of the most efficient ways that I believe I branded my artist was through clothing.
Clothing plays a vital role in the Indie genre with Icons like Liam Gallagher himself wearing
outgoing and well known brands which people identify as being his style straight away.
Consequently this is something I wanted to incorportae into my products as I felt that if a
particular ite of clothing could be linked to my artist, then people would be able to
recognise who it is. In our music video Ryan can be seen wearing a colourful, retro adidas
jacket throughout all stages of the production and on my digipak he is wearing the same
jacket in all of the images of him. On my digipak the colours of the jacket are vibrant
because I have put the rest of the image in black and white. This makes it easy for the
audience to connect the two, creating a strong brand.
Link between Digipak
and Poster
There are multiple links between my digipak and my digipak poster which build a
strong brand. As mentioned, my logo features on both products but I have also
used the same fonts across the two ancillary tasks. The album title has been
edited as a slice effect to clearly demonstrate the gritty indie genre and the
artist name has continued the same enabling the audience to clealry depict the
identity of the artist and make clear links between the projects. The theme has
also been translated into both tasks. Even though the image on the poster is
different to the front image on the digipak, I have kept the same background
used the same technique to acheive similar results and make a strong link. Even
though the front images arent the same, I have ensured that they still link
because they were taken at the same location enabling the audience to link the
artist with it.
camera/performance
When filming and photo taking, I considered the fact that my artist was a solo artist and
that this needed to be cearly expressed to the audience. Consequently, close-ups of him
feature a lot in the music video to show that he is the main and only character and in the
digipak tasks I made sure that he was the main focus of the shot and that no one else
appeared in the shot which I think I did well. Along with camera elements, I also made
sure that my artists performance had confidence and a slight cockiness to clearly
demonstrate to the audience who is in control. This was acheived in both sucumstaces
and the combination of camera nd peformance created a strong brand.
Summary
Overall I believe that I created a very strong brand, particularly through my use of clothing and usage of the logo which were the most
successful. However, there are some areas that could have been improved to further enhance the artists brand. Mise En Scene
between the two projects was lacking, specifically props where they were clearly evident in the videos performance section.
Therefore, I could have included a panel from the studio rather than images all from the narrative locations as this would have
enhanced the brand by implying that the focus is on the mainly on the music above everything else. Another element where I felt I
could have improved was my link between the digipak and poster. Even though the same fonts and themes were used, I would have
liked to have madea stronger link with the images and maybe incorportated my logo on the oster in a similar way to my digipak front
cover. However, there is a clear brand distinction between the two products which I beleibve the aud
Logo
This logo is incorporated in some way on of my digipak and
poster. On my poster it is position in the bottom corner and
on the digipak it is displayed with an image inside it as the
front cover and also features on the CD and back panels. It
was important that my logo could clearly be identified on
both products so that it would be easy for the audience to
link the two together along with other elements. Logos in the
indie genre are usually black and white and are very
simplistic which is what I have tried to follow for my own
example.
