Hormones are substances that help us to control our bodies
They are the second control system (the first being the nervous system)
Responses controlled by the nervous system are fast and generally over quickly, but responses controlled by hormones are slow and generally last for a long time
Hormones are soluble substances made by a number of glands which make up the endocrine system
The endocrine gland makes hormones and releases them into the bloodstream
Different hormones are made to trigger different organs
Most endocrine glands are controlled by the pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain
For the body to function properly, it needs the correct amount of each hormone
The master gland (pituitary gland) makes the most hormones and they control and coordinate the other hormones
Adrenaline prepares the body for action and causes the heart and breathing rate to increase, and directs blood to the muscles
Testosterone causes sexual development in males and oestrogen causes sexual development in females
