Chemistry
Basics
Atom- is the simplest part of an element eg. O (oxygen)
Compound- 2 or more atoms joined together eg.NaCl
Molecule- usually when two of the same atoms are joined and are usually gases eg. CO2
Ion- an atom with a charge eg. Na+
Structure of an atom
Number of electrons is equal to the number of protons
So they have no overall charge
Limestone
The main compound found in limestone is calcium carbonate
CaCO3= calcium carbonate
Limestone cycle
Calcium Carbonate (Limestone) CaCO3
Heat
Calcium Oxide (Lime/ quick lime) CaCO
Add a little water
Calcium Hydroxide ( Slaked lime.) Ca(OH)2
Add more water and filter
Calcium hydroxide solution ( Limewater ) CaCOH2 (H2O)
Add CO2
Sedimentary rock
Can be quarried to be used as building materials
Advantages: Creates jobs, when quarried it is then landscaped so fits in with natural scenery and is a useful material.
Disadvantages: Traffic congestion, greenhouse gases, explosives cause pollution and destroy habitats.
Glass making- glass is made by mixing limestone with sand and soda.
Extracting metals
Reactivity series:
Potassium
Sodium
Calcium
Magnesium
Aluminium
Carbon
Zinc
Iron
Tin
Lead
Hydrogen
Copper
Silver
Gold
Platinum
