Chemistry Topic 8: Chemical Analysis
  1. Gas Tests
    1. Hydrogen
      1. Place a lit splint in a test tube of gas. It should make a squeaky pop.
        1. Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid ---> Hydrogen + Magnesium chloride
        2. Oxygen
          1. Hydrogen peroxide ---> Water + Oxygen
            1. Collect gas in a boiling tube, insert glowing splint. It should relight if oxygen is present.
            2. Carbon Dioxide
              1. Calcium carbonate + Hydrochloric acid ---> Carbon dioxide + Water + Calcium chloride
                1. Test your gas by bubbling it through limewater. The limewater should turn cloudy.
                2. Chlorine
                  1. Makes damp blue litmus paper turn red, and then bleaches it white. Chlorine makes damp starch-iodide paper turn blue-black.
