• This theme suggests that Pride and Prejudice is a novel about people who rely on the initial appearance and behaviour of others when forming opinions about them. 

1. Elizabeth Bennet.

   Annotations:

   • - First impressions of Darcy was that he was arrogant and portrayed his pride in a rude manner, and from point dot she didn't like him. - First impressions of Wickham was that he was a handsome innocent man who only held good intentions. 
2. Mr Darcy.

   • - Darcy disliked the Bennet family. (mostly Mrs Bennet) - First impressions of Elizabeth were that she was an unattractive girl who was of no interest to him. - First impressions of Jane were that she was indifferent.
3. Mrs Bennet.

   • - First impressions of any unmarried man is that they are potential husbands for her 5 daughters. - First impressions of Mr Darcy were that he was a "a most disagreeable, horrid man".  

Annotations:

• The institution of marriage is of fundamental importance, socially and financially, especially to women. 

1. Social Balls.

   Annotations:

   • - allows people to meet but not a lot of intimacy.  - the men ask for permission to dance with a woman, and dancing more than once with the same person is a sign of interest, just like Bingley did with Jane.  
2. Visiting the family.

   Annotations:

   • - custom for courting men to call in regularly on the families of the women they are interested in, to follow this up with marriage proposals and formal requests for parental permission to wed. 
3. Practicality or Love?

   Annotations:

   • Most women in Jane Austen's era married for practicality over love. For example; Charlotte Lucas married Mr Collins to stop disappointing her parents and finally move out, and start her own life at the age of 27.  No love involved originally. 

Annotations:

• Jane Austen writes at a point of social change, and one area in which pride is seen to prevail is in the differences of class and wealth between characters.

   • - Prejudice against Mr Darcy at first when she makes up her mind about him too quickly, based on his rude and stand-offish behaviour. 
2. Mr Darcy.

   Annotations:

   • Learns to regulate his pride appropriately and must learn to bury his prejudices against the Bennet family when addressing himself to Elizabeth .
3. Mr Collins.

   Annotations:

   • Is very proud to be associated with Lady Catherine and her vision of the world. He is shown as ludicrously proud and stupid.
