The flooding in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina,
footage from a documentary about bounce (a New
Orleans genre) called That B.E.A.T. of an establishing
shot of a sinking police car.
Racial tension, American police brutality, black lives matter
shown in a shot of a lone dancing boy. Also in graffiti that
reads 'stop shooting us'
Historical parallels with references to racism and
slavery shown through costume. Image of
newspaper with Martin Luther King, black parades.
Present day ghettos and issues, such as black
womens hair. These issues are shown through use
of setting in mise en scene, with wide shots, and a
wide shot of a wig store.
Beyonce is shown to be sat on top of a sinking police car. This could be
symbolic for those historically oppressed as slaves triumphing over the
police. It is also symbolic to the fact that lots of African Americans
drowned due to Hurricane Katrina and the police did nothing
Beyonce dancing in a red outfit with padded shoulders in a
'plantation' style mansion is her rebelling against her historical
legacy and current stereotypes
Assertive and abusive gesture in lyrics. Her costume
and standing outside of a plantation house, showing
her ownership of previous places that had slavery.
Beyonce takes ownership wearing
the antebellum dress that previous
slave owners would've worn.
Contradictory factors, such as antebellum dresses and tight red costume to dance in. The video
and song is to raise what the issues are, where as applying Barthes symbolic code, the idea of
dressing in tight costume may imply solutions to the problems
Beyonces attitude changes throughout the video, some of er gestures are
offensive and dont really have a political message. With modern dances and
outfits, the video implies her also trying to sell her music, more than getting a
message across.
Personal video, references to her family and daughter.
Women sexualised, however the use of women dancing
in formation, and she is reclaiming old history.
Race is hsown to be an issue in
the video, eventhough beyonce
is one of the most powerful and
inpirational people that people
idolise modernly.
Beyonce could be using the issues to promote herself. Belittling the issues to
make herself money is a controversial issue.
Theories
bell hooks/feminist theory- she is a strong, talented role model, the
video has the aspect of women being in formation together.
Sexualises and objectifies women, new feminism as women should
be able to dress how they want.
Paul Gilroy/ethnicity theory- challenged as the video
has entirely AA participants. Conforms as it says
racism is an issue, involving oppression and poverty.
