Wave
  1. Types of waves
    1. Longitudinal
      1. Vibration is parallel to the direction of travel
        1. e.g sound waves

          Annotations:

          • - Required medium as it cannot travel through a vacuum
      2. Transverse
        1. vibration is perpendicular to direction of travel
          1. e.g electromagnetic waves

            Annotations:

            • -no medium required  - travel at a speed of light (3x10^8 m/s)
      3. Diffraction and Interference
        1. bending of waves as they pass around a barrier
          1. when two barriers form a narrow slit, curved waves are formed
            1. coherent waves of same f can be generated by diffracting single wave thourgh two or more narrow slits
              1. When emitted from different sources, the interference pattern is formed
                1. constructive intf.
                  1. -occurs along antinodal lines/ crest + crest/ trough + trough/ loud sound
                  2. destructive intf.
                    1. occurs along the nodal lines/ crest + trough = cancelled out / quiet sound
                    2. Superposition
