Thyroid gland does not produce enough
thyroid hormone. Caused by
inflammation of the thyroid gland,
autoimmune disease such as thyroiditis,
arthropathy of the thyroid gland,
medications and iodine imbalance. Could
also be caused by radiation.
Assess thyroid glands, monitor vital
signs (especially temperature and RR),
encourage patient to drink more
with FBC monitoring, deep breathing
exercises, record daily weight, evaluate
electrolyte levels.
Fatigue
Increased sensitivity to cold
Constipation
Dry skin
Low heart rate 'bradycardia'
Weight gain
Muscle weakness
Joint pain and swelling
Depression
Irregular periods
Most commonly caused
by Hashimoto's disease
Reduce coffee intake as
this affects absorption
of T4
