Resource summary

Human impact on environment
  1. World's populations is increasing
    1. birth rates are higher than death rate
      1. bad impact on environment as pollution increases and more resources are being used up
        1. high standards from developed countries demand more resources
          1. these countries have a small proportion of population
            1. but cause a big proportion of the pollution
    2. GLOBAL WARMING
      1. fossil fuels = coals, oils and natural gas
        1. when these are burnt they release lots of carbon dioxide = greenhouse gas
          1. greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere causing global temperatures to rise = global warming
            1. scientists have predicted that if global warming goes up then sea level will rise. Weather systems will become hard to predict and agricultural output will fall
              1. amount of greenhouse gases given off at a certain time( by a person) = carbon footprint
      2. ACID RAIN
        1. fossil fuels and waste material burnt = releases gas called sulfur dioxide
          1. sulfur dioxide reacts with water in the atmosphere = sulfuric acid = falls as acid rain
            1. acid rain damages soil and can kill trees
              1. acid rain can cause lakes to become more acidic.
                1. severe effect on the ecosystem = changes the pH= kills animals and plants
                  1. acid rain damages limestone, ruining building and stone statues
          2. OZONE DEPLETION
            1. CFCs = chlorofluorocarbons = aerosols, fridges, air conditioning units and polystyrene foam
              1. they break down the ozone in the upper atmosphere
                1. allowing harmful UV rays to reach the earth surface
                  1. exposed to UV rays = increase in skin cancer
                    1. Autralia has high levels of skin cancer bcuz its under an ozone hole
                      1. increase in UV rays might kill plankton in the sea
                        1. ving a massive effect on the sea ecosytem
                          1. fish levels may drop
