                          1. Harry Truman was the American President at the time
                          2. USSR
                            1. At first the USSR was lead by Josef Stalin
                              1. Then Nikita Khrushchev took over when Stalin died in 1953
                            2. Where?
                              1. The two superpowers involved were the USA and the USSR
                                1. these two became bitter rivals after the defeat of Germany in WWII
                                  1. On one hand the USA wanted to start slowly giving them a second chance
                                    1. But on the other hand the USSR wanted to completely destroy Germany and claim the land for themselves
                                2. What happened?
                                  1. When the Russians drove the Germans out of Eastern Europe they imposed pro-Russian Communist Governments
                                    1. They did this to ensure they wouldn't be invaded from the West again
                                      1. But the Western countries saw this as a move of Soviet aggression
                                    2. in 1947 President Truman declared that the USA would help any country trying to contain the spread of communism
                                      1. Known as the Truman Doctrine
                                      2. After WWII the allied powers split Germany into 4 sections
                                        1. The British zone
                                          1. The Soviet zone
                                            1. The French zone
                                              1. The US zone
                                                1. Each ruled by the countries they are named after
                                                  1. The USA, Britain and France were trying to build back up the economy of the parts of Germany they ruled
                                                    1. Wheras the USSR wanted to completely destroy Germany and make another communist country
                                                      1. So to ensure there is never a strong Germany again they built a wall through Germany
                                                        1. The Western allies didn't like this so they decided to help the people on the other side of the wall, This was called the Berlin Airlift
                                                          1. This was when the USA sent over food and supplies to the people in need on the other side
                                                            1. Stalin saw that he could not win so he lifted the blockade in May of 1949
