Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfers
Dissipate: Ways in which energy is being wasted
Energy Transfers
In a system, energy transforms from one form to the other
In a closed system, there is no change in net in total energy
Sometimes the transfer is not useful, it is wasted
Dissipation is one time of transfer
Example
A kettle boiling water. The kettle is supplied with electrical energy which is transferred to thermal energy in the water.
Reducing Energy Dissipation
Double glazed windows trap air in the house
Loft insulation reduces heat loss
Carpets reduce heat loss
Thermal Conductivity
This is the amount of energy transferred through a material
Brick and Glass have a low thermal energy
High thermal conductivity means high energy transfer
