the basics of computer science
  1. CPU
    1. the cpu is the central processing unit
      1. what the cpu does is to fetch and execute instructions from the memory
        1. the fetch and execute cycle
        2. the cpu is more or less the brain of the computer
        3. the cpu processes data
        4. the fetch and execute cycle
          1. basically this cycle we speak of is carried out by the cpu
            1. fetching is when the cpu finds out which instruction it needs to carry out. the nstruction comes from the memory
              1. the cpu fetches the instruction from the memory and then carries it out.
              2. RAM
                1. stands for random access memory
                  1. all contents of the ram is lost when the power is switched off
                    1. when a program loads, the instructions are loaded unto ram
                    2. ROM
                      1. stands for read only memory
                        1. the rom stores data that will not need to be updated
                          1. when the power is switched off, the data does not go anywhere
                          2. ALU
                            1. stands for arithmetic logic unit
                              1. this is one part of the CPU
                                1. this is where all the calculations take place
                                2. control unit
                                  1. retrived data from the memory and executes the instructions
                                    1. directs the flow of insructions and co-ordinates parts of the cpu
                                  2. different types of memory
                                    1. cloud storage
                                      1. e.g: icloud
                                        1. refers to when data is stored away from the computer
                                          1. and can be accesed at different points over the internet
                                          2. magnetic storage
                                            1. include the actual hard disk that the memory is stored on
                                            2. optical storage
                                              1. e.g: cd's, dvd's etc.
                                                1. are written and read using lasers
                                                2. solid state storage
                                                  1. e.g: flash drives and usb's
                                                    1. use electronic circuits to store data
                                                    2. These are all secondary storage
                                                    3. HDD
                                                      1. stands for hard disk drive
                                                        1. can store large amounts of data
                                                      2. flash memory
                                                        1. operates in a similar way to ROM
                                                          1. uses electronic chips as storage
                                                            1. is portable
                                                        2. cache memory
