Atomic Radius
  1. Atomic Size: defined by how closely an atom lies to a neighboring atom
    1. Metals- atomic radius is half the distance between adjacent nuclei in a crystal of the element
      1. Nonmetals- typically form compounds; atomic radius is half the distance between nuclei of two identical atoms that are bonded together
        1. Ionic Radius
          1. Atoms gain or lose electrons to form ions
            1. Electrons gain a negative charge, so a loss or gain results in a net charge
              1. Ions have either postive or negative energy
            2. Cations: when atoms lose electron they form positive ions and become smaller
              1. Anions: when atoms gain electrons they form negative ions and become larger
