How Ireland was
governed
- 1154: King Henry II became Lord of Ireland in a letter from the Pope (a Papal Bull)
- King appointed a Lord Deputy from the Old English lords
to rule in his name
- Over time, many of the Old English inter-married with Irish
families and adopted Gaelic customs
- Eventually English power over much of Ireland declined
- Certain members of the big families even gained control of the office of Lord Deputy,
so the King's authority declined further
- Adoption of Irish laws and customs
left less and less territory to be
controlled
