The story takes place in Charleston,
North Carolina for the majority of the
book.
Characters
Teenie
Teenie is very gentle because
she acts as though she were
the girls' mother and never
gets mad when they do
something wrong, she just
teaches them the right thing
to do.
She is also very caring
because she wants the best
for everyone else before she
worries about what she
wants. She always cares for
the others on the plantation
by bringing them extra food,
or helping them with their
jobs.
Polly
Polly is very mouthy
because she can never
stop talking back to her
master, Mr. Derby.
Although, she is very
understanding about Amari's
situation and helps her with
her adjustment to being a
slave in America.
Amari
Amari is very confused
throughout the book. She
does not understand why she
was taken from her home
village and sent to be a slave
in America. She is always
confused about why all the
African people are treated so
poorly .
Though, Amari is very strong. She does
not hesitate to do why she thinks is right
for herself. She stays strong throughout
the entire process of being captured,
sold, and abused at the plantation.
Main Conflict
Problem: Amari has to adjust to a whole new life.
Cause: Amari is stolen
from her African village
to be a slave in America
Theme
Message: It is hard to build yourself back up,
when everything is taken from you.
How brought out in my book: Amari has such a hard time starting her slave life in American, when all her
friends and family were completely removed from her life. She finds it hard to forget about all the terror of
having nothing.
